Evaluation of biodegradability and compostability
The terms biodegradability and compostability are associated with environmentally friendly products that are part of earth lifecycle and can be degraded back into natural elements. Legislation and guidelines at European and global level are increasingly striving for sustainable development with the demand for the biodegradability, composting and ecotoxicity testing. With worldwide recognized equipment (ECHO respirometer) and a high degree of flexibility, we can evaluate your product in accordance with applicable standards and recommendations on biodegradability, compostability and ecotoxicity.
We offer a thorough examine of documentation and help you determine the laboratory analyses needed according to legal and your customers’ requirements.. We listen to your needs and guide you through the entire process of issuing declaration of compliance for your product / material with current legislation:
SIST EN 13432: 2001: Packaging - Requirements for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation - Test scheme and evaluation criteria for the final acceptance of packaging
SIST EN 14995: 2007: Plastics - Evaluation of compostability - Test scheme and specifications
SIST EN ISO 14855-1: 2013: Determination of the ultimate aerobic biodegradability of plastic materials under controlled composting conditions - Method by analysis of evolved carbon dioxide - Part 1: General method (ISO 14855-1:2012)
SIST EN 14045: 2003: Packaging - Evaluation of the disintegration of packaging materials in practical oriented tests under defined composting conditions
SIST EN ISO 20200: Plastics — Determination of the degree of disintegration of plastic materials under simulated composting conditions in a laboratory-scale test
OECD Guidelines for the Testing of Chemicals, Section 2: Test No. 208: Terrestrial Plant Test: Seedling Emergence and Seedling Growth Test
In addition to the declaration of compliance we offer you also the use of registered ICP labels for visual branding of the conformity of your products with the valid legislative requirements for biodegradation, industrial and/or home composting.
Pulp and Paper Institute has registered labels, confirming that the product is biodegradable / suitable for industrial composting / suitable for domestic composting and meets the criteria set out in current European standards, and is verified by ICP.
With increasing global environmental awareness, the importance of producing sustainable materials, is driving manufacturers to be ahead of the curve and gain market share for the future. Registered labels represent certification according to SIST EN 13432:2001 (“Packaging - Requirements for packaging recoverable through composting and biodegradation - Test scheme and evaluation criteria for the final acceptance of packaging”) which is applied to plastic packaging and lignocellulosic materials and SIST EN 14995:2007 (‘Plastics - Evaluation of compostability - Test scheme and specifications’’) that covers a wider range of applications. Recognized labels are validation that product-specific suitability has been checked and approved by an independent third party. By that companies can create brand equity for their products by making them visible, memorable and superior in quality and reliability.
