Onion peels contain 36% cellulose, 33% hemicellulose and less than 5% lignin. This interesting composition of biomass also allows the production of paper. Our researcher Dr. Tea Kapun presented research and findings on the use of onion peels as agri-food residues in the circular consumption of materials. Due to the high content of lignocellulose and large amounts of phenolic compounds, agri-food plant waste is suitable for valorization in packaging materials. These materials can offer the paper industry a competitive advantage as specialized packaging materials using low-cost raw materials. Learn more about the process in the video.
