Laboratory and pilot equipment
From the aspect of technical furnishing with equipement and having personnel with specific knowledge and experience the laboratory of papermaking provides resources for quality testing. More than 120 different testing methods are included in its offer. Since 2005, the laboratory has been accredited by the Slovenian Accreditation in accordance with SIST EN ISO/IEC 17025 (Accreditation Certificate LP-058).
Pulp and Paper Institute, with its Laboratory and the Pilot equipment represents the only papermaking infrastructure center in the area of SE Europe. The papermaking laboratory is devidet in four testing sections: mechanical-physical, graphical, chemical and microbiological testing, and together with pilot equipment (pilot papermaking machine, pilot coating machine and calendaring machine) covers the entire paper production process. Laboratory equipment enables the study and characterization of input materials, the characterization of paper and paper products, waste water, solid waste and the evaluation of the production process. The developed and implemented analytical methods in the different areas of testing ensure solutions for different complex challenges related to the surface, optical, printing and other specific properties of the materials.
FIBER CHARACTERIZATION AND FUNCTIONALIZATION EQUIPMENT
In the framework of the InnoRenew CoE (Renewable Materials and Health Environments Research and Innovation Center of Excellence) we have established centre for fiber characterization and functionalization with newly acquired equipment:

Pilot paper machine
Pilot paper machine is purposed for testing new raw materials, technologies and papers. On the machine, it is possible to produce paper basis weight from 50 to 300 g/m2 and width up to 62 cm. The machine consists of a Fourdrinier headbox system, the production capacity is approx. 100 kg/h, speed up to 50 m/min.
A quality control system (QCS) was recently installed, which enables on-line monitoring of paper production in two dimensions: machine direction and cross-machine direction. The basic quality control system includes monitoring and measurement of basis weight and moisture, in addition, thickness and fillers content in the paper. We improved the stability and regulation of stock inlet system, which results in better quality of the produced paper.
We deliver homogeneous paper quality, thus meeting the requirements of our clients for standardized and even-quality paper parameters.
Laboratory pilot coating unit allows testing of usage of various coatings in various processes on various materials (paper, cardboard, millboard and other fibre materials).
- Min and max grammage of the base material: 40-300 g/m²
- Applications systems: filmpress, blade, rod, 3-roll-system
- Drying system: IR (10-100%) and hot air (up to 160˚C)
- Speed: up to 5 m/min on on-line module (roll to roll) and up to 35 m/min (sheet), depending on base material and reology of coating color
- Width of the paper roll: max 250 mm
- Min and max application of coating color (g/m²): 1-30, depending on base material and reology of coating color
The pilot calender with one or two nips, equipped with paper and chrome-plated rolls has the following characteristics:
- Width: 54.5 cm
- Velocity: 10 - 60 m/min
- Load: 0 - 4 t
- Rolls hardness: 88 Sh (D)
- Rolls temperature: up to 130° C
- Calendering from reel or individual sheets
UV LED Inkjet Printer
It enables high quality six color printing on almost all types of materials (paper, board, wood, ceramics ...) up to a height of 10 cm. The maximum size of the printing material is up to 100 × 160 cm. Apex UV LED printer is equipped with processed CMYK printing inks, extra white, lacquer and a RIP (raster image processor) processor for color correction.
Screen Printing Machine
It provides printing with various types of printing colors (water based, solvent, UV) and functional printing inks for printed electronics, the development of bio-sensors, special pigments that enable the development of intelligent and active packaging. In addition, it allows coating and application of various adhesives. We can print on products of various shapes and materials (metal, plastic, cardboard ...). The size of the printing material is 50 × 70 cm. The maximum height of the printing material is 30 cm.
Computer-controlled cutter Esko Starter X enables cutting, creasing and other processing of flat products in the size of up to 120 × 160 cm. With it, we can structurally design and manufacture prototypes of packaging, furniture, lighter construction elements from a wide range of materials (thickness up to 2 cm).
